Philippines
The Philippine Islands is the 12th most populous nation in the world with over 97 million people, 32 million which are children. Child abandonment and abuse represents one of the biggest dangers to Filipino children, jeopardizing their lives, their health, and their physical, emotional and intellectual growth. One of every four Filipino children experiences some form of abuse whether abandonment, sexual or labor exploitation or physical and medical neglect.
Throughout the undeveloped world there are communities of desperately poor families known as "basureros" (trash collectors or dump people) whose livelihood is centered on the environment of the garbage dump. The children of these families are a particular concern for us at Abandoned Children’s Fund.
